This book is infuriating me for reasons far too...
Suffice it to say that it includes the sentence “I will not allow my efforts at theory construction to be needlessly constrained by available observational data.”

So I just e-mailed my professor a question about...
Specifically, I asked him where to find some articles that aren’t available on JSTOR or, despite what his syllabus says, in the giant reader we have for the class. When professors get an e-mail like that from a student timestamped after midnight on a Saturday, they judge the student, right? Like, my weekend has been spent this way because of this professor’s class, but I can...

Usually if I’m reading something that takes a lot of concentration, I listen to something instrumental like Explosions in the Sky so I’m not distracted by words, but it turns out words that mean nothing to me don’t distract me, either. Thanks, French people. In other news, this book continues to be largely incomprehensible, in silence or otherwise. I suspect some of it is...

I recognize that Leonard Cohen's is the best, but...
I saw her perform it at Irving Plaza in 2005, and as soon as she started playing, everybody in the room kind of stopped breathing because they didn’t want any other sound to sully the air. And that’s always going to stay with me.

For the record
My hierarchy of Hallelujahs: Cohen > Spektor > Buckley > Wainwright > … > Bono As much as I like Wainwright’s, it’s basically just a worse version of Buckley’s.  Those ellipses represent every other version of “Hallelujah” that has ever been recorded and ever will be recorded, because it is not possible to record a worse version than Bono did.

amyandronicus: The problem with underground and DIY music scenes has always been their exclusiveness. America’s punk movement, which has offered refuge to countless misfits and dreamers over the years, has also erected numerous barriers to entry. Dead Republican Presidents. You gotta love 'em.
In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower (R) wrote a letter to his brother. “Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history,” Ike said. The president acknowledged in the letter that there are some who advocate such nonsense, but added, “Their number is...
